Yamaska Valley Optimists Raise $56,500 in Tenth Annual Walk Against Women’s Cancer
Cowansville, October, 2011: Over 400 walkers braved a rainy Sunday morning on Sunday, October 2, to make the Tenth Annual Walk Against Women’s Cancer another important success.
This year’s event enabled the Yamaska Valley Optimist Club to present a cheque for over $56, 500 to the BMP Foundation towards the eventual purchase of a new 3-D gynecological surgical laser unit.
“Our goal is to raise awareness regarding women’s cancer, and to raise money to help in the fight against a disease which has stricken over 2,000,000 North American women over the past decade alone,” explains club president Suzan Smith.
The proposed surgical laser unit, will be used primarily for the treatment of cervical cancer and the treatment of benign lesions. This unit will provide enhanced surgical capability, less need for anesthetics and less medication, fewer post-surgical complications (reduced bleeding and pain), faster healing and fewer scars. It will be the first such unit in Quebec in a non-university hospital and will be used for over 150 cases per year with a variety of needs. It will also be available for ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) and for Urology interventions.
The Walk is an ideal family outing, with two routes of five and ten kilometres through the scenic streets of Knowlton, followed by a BBQ lunch that is served to all participants.
“Unfortunately the battle against cancer remains an ongoing struggle.” adds Honorary President Anneliese Macek of Cowansville. “We will be walking again next year, in support of those who face this battle at a very personal level. We hope you will walk alongside us at that time.”
The BMP Foundation thanks all who participated, both as walkers and sponsors, the Yamaska Valley Optimist Club as the main organizing body, and Pharmacie Jean Coutu of Cowansville for its role as major sponsor.
