Optimists & BMP Foundation Partner in Fight Against Breast Cancer on Sunday,
September 30th
Over 200 participants walked either 5 or 10 kms. in
Knowlton on Sunday, October, 1st in the annual Walk Against Breast Cancer. Organized by the Yamaska
Valley Optimist Club, the event raised $27,000 for the BMP's Oncology Fund to help local women in
the fight against breast cancer here at the CSSS La Pommeraie.
The goal of the event is two fold: to raise awareness regarding breast cancer and
to raise money to help in the fight against a disease which has stricken over 2,000,000 North
American women over the past decade alone.
The Honorary President of the Walk was Alyssa Bleser. Alyssa accepted the role in
honour of her mother, Irene Berke, who recently lost her battle with cancer. Irene was a founding
member of the Yamaska Valley Optimist Club and participated in the annual walk every year. In 2005
she collected the most sponsorship money and she was an inspiration to many.
The BMP Foundation is pleased to be associated with the event. “The
region’s Optimist Clubs and members have been longstanding partners with us in raising funds
for the BMP Birthing centre. We value them equally as partners in this event.” adds
FrankJohnston-Main on behalf of the Foundation.
